What is the CCSMP Customer Success certification?

The Certified CSM Professional (CCSMP) is the Practical CSM certification: the Customer Success Manager certification built and assessed by working practitioners and governed by an independent oversight committee against a published standard. It is built on the Practical CSM Framework, and it proves you can do the work of a Customer Success (or client success) manager, not just describe it.

Knowing the theory is not the same as doing the job

Most Customer Success certifications hand you definitions and frameworks, then leave you alone with a real account that is about to churn. You finish the program knowing what a health score is. You still do not know what to do when the number turns red. That gap is where careers stall and renewals slip away.

Certified CSM Professional closes that gap

Instead of memorizing theory, you practice the moves real Customer Success Managers make every day, from onboarding to renewal to the difficult conversation. By the end you will not just understand Customer Success. You will be able to run it, and you will have the credential to prove it.

The authority behind your certification

Practical CSM sets and owns the standard that CCSMP certifies against. We publish the Practical CSM Framework, the only globally published, vendor-neutral framework for Customer Success, and Customer Success teams at major enterprises use it to run their work. That is why a growing number of employers look specifically for people certified by Practical CSM.

The framework and courses were authored by Rick Adams, who created Cisco’s original Customer Success Manager certification.

Before that he founded and sold a software company. Today Practical CSM runs as a dedicated training company, pairing that Customer Success authorship with deep experience in business and online learning. When you certify with CCSMP, you learn the standard from the people who set it.

Where are you now?

One certification, three journeys. Pick the one that sounds like you.

Breaking into Customer Success

Moving in from support, sales or account management? Build a portfolio of real Customer Success work, so you walk into interviews with proof you can do the job, not just a certificate. It is the client success manager certification that turns transferable skills into evidence.

Already a CSM, leveling up

Master expansion, renewals and the difficult conversations that get CSMs promoted, and earn the Customer Success Manager certification that proves you can run them.

Certifying a team

Standardize your team on one set of playbooks so retention does not depend on a few heroes, and certify everyone to the same bar.

How to become a certified Customer Success Manager

Four steps from where you are now to a Customer Success Manager certification you can prove.

  1. Choose an applied certification. Pick one built on a real, published framework and assessed against practice, not a quiz you can pass by watching videos.
  2. Work through Levels 1 to 4. Apply the Practical CSM Framework to real customer situations as you go, from onboarding to renewal.
  3. Pass the two-part final exam at Level 4. One part tests your knowledge, one tests how you apply it. Pass both to become a certified Customer Success Manager (CCSMP).
  4. Stay current with CPD. Keep your certification live through the ongoing Level 5 cycle of continuing professional development.

How the certification works: four levels

Our Customer Success Management certification runs as four foundational levels that build on each other, from the fundamentals of the role to running Customer Success at a professional standard, with the two-part final exam at Level 4. You only ever learn what is next for you.

Modules 1 to 2, each with a test and a workbook. What Customer Success is and how the role works alongside sales, support and product, plus the business foundations: the 14 Tenets, Customer Lifetime Value, organizational structure and the Business Motivation Model. This is CCSMP Basic on its own, the Level 1 certification.
Modules 3 to 5, each with a test and a workbook. Framework phases 1 to 3: prepare for a new customer, secure commitment, and run onboarding so customers reach value faster.
Modules 6 to 10, each with a test and a workbook. Framework phases 4 to 7: adoption planning and implementation, value realization, and engagement evaluation, then putting it all together.
The two-part final exam: Exam A tests your knowledge, Exam B tests real-world application. No new modules here, this is where you prove it. Pass both to become a Level 4 Certified CSM Professional.

Level 5 and beyond

Where you go after Level 4 depends on your story

Most programs push everyone down the same road: you finished the certification, so now you must do leadership training. We have spoken to enough Customer Success Managers and leaders to know it is not that simple. Some go deeper into practice, some into leadership, some into a specialty. That is why Level 5 is CPD all-access: a growing library you draw from based on where you actually want to go, and the way you keep your certification current year after year. It comes included with CCSMP Full.

What you will be able to do

Not what you will know. What you will be able to do on Monday morning.

  • Plan and run onboarding so customers reach value faster
  • Map and manage the stakeholders across a customer account
  • Build an engagement and success plan tied to the customer’s outcomes
  • Drive adoption and catch an at-risk account before it churns
  • Lead value-based business reviews (QBRs) that customers act on
  • Turn renewals and expansion into a repeatable process, not a scramble
  • Have the difficult conversation without losing the relationship
  • Prove your impact with health scores, retention and reporting that land

The highest-quality lessons in Customer Success

Self-paced study is hard enough. Most Customer Success certifications are slideshows with a voiceover. Ours are not. We built broadcast-quality lessons so you stay with it and actually finish.

Human-first instruction. A real expert trainer on camera, filmed waist-up with eye contact and natural gestures, not a faceless voice over slides.

Studio-grade production. High-definition video and clear audio, with real visualizations that make complex ideas land.

Built to keep you going. Self-paced study is hard. We designed genuinely engaging lessons so you actually finish.

Learn by doing, with tools you keep

The tools are the heart of how we teach. You do not just learn the theory. You get the actual tool, watch an expert use it, apply it to your own customers, and keep using it long after you certify.

Download the tool

Every module gives you the actual template or tool, yours to keep.

Why CCSMP beats theory-only certifications

When you compare Customer Success Manager certifications, the difference comes down to applied practice. Most teach you what Customer Success is. CCSMP proves you can do it.

Independently overseen

CCSMP standards and assessment are governed by an independent certification committee of senior Customer Success leaders, from companies including Oracle, HubSpot and CSM Practice. Each year they review the exams, pass rates and assessment standards, and periodically they revisit the certification content and consider new topics, so the credential means the same thing for everyone who earns it.

Questions

Customer Success certification questions, answered

Is CCSMP recognized, and do employers value it?2026-07-11T01:16:55+00:00

Yes. CCSMP is governed by an independent oversight committee and built on the globally published Practical CSM Framework, which Customer Success teams at major enterprises use. A growing number of employers look specifically for people certified by Practical CSM.

Is this the same as a client success manager certification?2026-07-11T01:16:55+00:00

Yes. Client success manager and Customer Success Manager are the same role in most companies, and CCSMP is the certification for both.

What is the difference between CCSMP and CCSM?2026-07-11T01:16:55+00:00

CCSMP is our credential, the Certified CSM Professional. People often use “CCSM” more loosely to mean a certified Customer Success Manager. If you have been comparing a CCSM certification, or looking for a Level 1 certification to start, CCSMP is the practitioner-built, independently governed option, and CCSMP Level 1 is where you begin.

How is the certification structured across the five levels?2026-07-11T01:16:55+00:00

Levels 1 to 4 are the core certification (CCSMP): ten modules that build from the fundamentals of the role to professional practice, with the two-part final exam at Level 4. Level 5 is different. It is an ongoing yearly cycle where you keep your certification current through continuing professional development (CPD), rather than more exams.

What is the final exam like?2026-07-11T01:16:55+00:00

The final exam sits at Level 4 and has two parts. Exam A is 60 minutes, 50 questions in the same format as the module tests, covering all ten modules, with a 75% pass mark. Exam B is 40 minutes, 8 longer scenario questions that test how you apply what you know to real situations, again across all ten modules, with a 62% pass mark. You pass both to certify.

How long does it take to complete?2026-07-11T01:16:55+00:00

Most learners complete Levels 1 to 4 in about 6 to 8 months at roughly 2 hours per week. Level 5 (CPD) is ongoing and depends on you. Use the duration calculator for an estimate at your own pace.

How much does the certification cost?2026-07-11T01:16:55+00:00

The Levels 1 to 4 certification is $487 as the Scholar package. You can start at Level 1 for $89, or buy level by level (Level 1 $89, Level 2 $138, Level 3 $229, Level 4 $94). The Full package at $617 adds Level 5 CPD all-access.

Does my certificate stay valid after access ends?2026-07-11T01:16:55+00:00

Your certificate and your public credential page stay accessible even after your 12-month access expires. To keep your certification current you renew on a simple cycle through CPD, and you never repurchase the certification.

What if it is not right for me?2026-07-11T01:16:55+00:00

You have a 14-day right to withdraw for a full refund, as long as you have not progressed past Level 1 (the first two modules). Because certifications stay permanently valid once issued, going beyond that point counts as full use. Business (B2B) purchases are final unless the content is defective or non-compliant.
