CS is not one-size-fits-all
How much Customer Success a startup needs depends on three factors: the complexity of your offering, the maturity of your customers and what your company can support at its current stage.
Complexity of offering
A product that needs little customer expertise to generate value needs less CS. When customers need support to use it effectively and reach their expected outcomes, plan for more.
Maturity of customers
Mature customers with adoption and change management experience may need little help. Busy or less experienced customers may need CSMs to onboard them quickly and reach value sooner.
Invest for your stage
A dedicated CS team needs recruitment, salaries, management, training and systems. Investors and advisors can give useful input, but the decision should reflect what your business and customers need.
Scale with automation
You may not need a separate CS function at first. As you grow, self-service and automation help customers generate value more independently, which supports renewal, expansion and advocacy.
